• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Some of you may have seen this story in The Guardian about how 600 books are due to published in one deluge:

Literary world overwhelmed by 600 books to be published on one day

Author David Nicholls has done good work by promoting unknown authors with his virtual launches, but on Thursday 3rd September the publishing industry is flooding the market with 600 new titles. Big stores will struggle to stock them all. Small independents will likely take only those written by established authors.

Imagine the plight of the debut author who’s finally secured a publishing contract after years of querying, to work with an editor to polish their manuscript and has been self-promoting like crazy in anticipation of their title appearing on bookshop shelves. Unless it’s somehow received favourable pre-publication reviews, it might not make it that far.

Instead of soaring on wings of exultation, that author would feel like a drowned rat!

It almost makes me glad to have stayed as a self-publishing Indie.

It’s another reminder of how publishing is a cutthroat business.
