It seems the story (see TechCrunch May 9) that ByteDance, owner of TikTok, is considering moving into book publishing is firming up – and the project is moving ahead.

The trademarked operation, set up via Lemon Inc., a ByteDance subsidiary, is called 8th Note Press. The list of products and services registered with it include: an app to read, download and discuss fiction e-books in an online community; retail bookstore services; ordering books in audio, printed and digital formats; publishing e-books, audiobooks and physical books, as well as providing online, non-downloadable fiction and non-fiction books.

Today The Bookseller (July 18) reports on correspondence given to it by an unidentified author who said they had received an offer to publish their 'fantasy and romance', but found the offer terms insufficiently attractive.

The New York Times has said that former Penguin Random House editor Katherine Pelz, a romance specialist, has been employed as an acquisitions editor by 8th Note Press.

The Bookseller reported that ByteDance stressed 8th Note Press was 'unaffiliated with TikTok and solely a ByteDance initiative'.
