Mainstream British TV drama is stuck in a rut – it’s stale, predictable and boring

IT’S a little early yet to be compiling a best of 2022 list. But if I had to name my five favourite brand new dramas, as opposed to returning ones, of the year so far, they would be, in no particular order: Slow Horses, Black Bird, The Ipcress File, Under the Banner of Heaven and We Own This City.

The problem with what I'm hearing from agents is this. They want more of the same. After all it's sold before. But there's a reason true crime is kicking fiction's ass. Real people are far more inventive than what's getting published.

Of course true crime is more interesting. It's true and not filtered through a corporate maze/microscope.

I was just chatting someone about this. I prefer true crime atm because it's unscripted.

Ipcress File series: The Ipcress File (TV Mini Series 2022) - IMDb. I don't even bother to watch the BBC anymore. As the reviewer says -it's all paint by numbers. Unless readers and viewers change I don't see a future for AI generated intellectual property. It may be able to fly planes better than humans but stories for the zeitgeist are still our bailiwick.
