• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

I closed my mouth and opened my eyes. The hallucinogen purged - I could see! It was a long strand of kelp. Mercy be.

The golden seal was a rock. The sand just looked purple in the sunset. Dean wasn't my uncle. The advancing soldiers looked real, though.

But tiny. I'd thought they were really far away, but no. Just tiny. And many. And, oh my god, that was sharp!

Shots rang out as I plunged back into the sea. I felt a bullet whistle past my ear. From hide and seek... To this?

I headed for the seaweed-covered rocks further out. Maybe I could hide among them.
But the incoming tide fought me all the way.

The bummer was walking would have been a lot easier. The sea was shallow enough but with a bed covered in prickly sea urchins.

Dang! I wished I'd paid attention in languages class. Then I'd have been able to speak their lingo and call them down.

No, don't think dragons - think hallucinogens! Dragons don't have guns, can't shoot. Keep runnin', dude, but not on starfish!

I huddled between rocks, under the seaweed. Round me, battle raged.

Let them fight. Did I have any mushrooms left? Yes!

It was carnage on the beach. Ragged children and dragons fighting soldiers. Exploring starfish. I swam out to sea as fast as possible.

The sea seemed to boil. Then, a lime green submarine burst up from the depths a short distance away. I shouted and waved.

Hang on - I ceased waving, ceased any noise bar the slosh of me treading water - submarines don't have arms . . . Oh God! It's a bloody Kraken!

Behind me on the beach, the soldiers were all dead or in retreat - killed by exploding starfish, dragon fire, and children's spears.

My fingers closed around the last of the – wet – mushrooms in my bag. Munch, munch.
Whooo!

A booming voice came from somewhere deep within the Kraken, though their mouth didn't move. 'You are mine.'
I accepted my fate.

An electric blue arc lit the sky. Startling neon green light poured from my finger-tips. Sod you, Kraken. Mushrooms rule! Bring it on!

Copulating plankton swirled around us. Spirals of silver shrimp. Pulsating purple jellyfish. The sea was in me and I was the sea.

Noooooooooooo, that feckup was indicative of my frenzied brain yesterday. Apologies to our most consistent FC winner this year :glowing-star:
