I absolutely love the premise — the discipline in faithfully portraying historical accuracy in exploring original ideas is both the method of the author, and the theme of the story! This is something to which I aspire in my own work, and it sounds like Barry Unsworth has achieved this in fine form — but has fallen prey as I also frequently have in taking that discipline and faithfulness too far, so as to become pedantic.
