• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence
    • Don't take offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Yes: great poem. Richard Burton did something similar -- the Kasidah -- but Fitzgerald's translation of the Rubaiyat is eternal.

Brings back memories. I remember "having to" read it as a schoolboy, "having to" because I hated reading anything remotely akin to poetry in those days. It made me realise there was more to poetry than I thought.

I was the same. I only read this guy because a long time ago girlfriend insisted on it and read him to me.
He liked his wine and good times did Omar and on top of his writing he was a renowned astrologer and mathematician
