• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

'It is my contention that a really great novel is made with a knife and not a pen. A novelist must have the intestinal fortitude to cut out even the most brilliant passage so long as it doesn't advance the story.'

"... even the most brilliant passage so long as it doesn't advance the story..."

That is a horrible construction, and the sentence is too long. What's wrong with: "...even the most brilliant passage IF – or equally WHEN – it doesn't advance the story" ?

I know he sold millions of books, but he must have seen some stalwart editing!
