• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

I used to be embarrassed because I was just a comic-book writer while other people were building bridges or going on to medical careers. And then I began to realise: entertainment is one of the most important things in people’s lives. Without it, they might go off the deep end. I feel that if you’re able to entertain people, you’re doing a good thing.

So true. Many years ago I was sent on a business writing course by an employer. AFAIR it was 3 days long. The course was called 'Write for your Reader'. Yes, it was about business writing, how to be succint and communicate clearly, the structure of the document and its purpose (not always to persuade). Since I've started writing fiction, I've sought to entertain, and the mantra 'write for your reader' is almost always at the back of my mind. Sadly I don't always succeed.
