• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

I’ve been getting acclimated to Litopia, reading a few posts and welcome threads. This seems to be the recommended place to start.
Question—why do we call it a colony?
My name is David from Saskatchewan, Canada. I love fiction in almost all genres, especially plot-driven with a certain humourous darkness. My own writing leans that way as well.
I’m very new and very unpublished. I have a novella which I am working to get published, and at the same time looking, thinking, and planning to expand it into a novel. It’s called Sewer Baby. It was written with no plan and just a “what-if” thought. I highly do not recommend this. It took 2 years, dozens of restarts and rewrites to get it to completion. I am also starting a project which has more of a plan. However, it honestly hasn’t been much easier!
When the big projects are dragging me down, I enjoy writing short stories and flash fiction.
I write advertising for a career and have been doing that longer than appropriate.
Outside of writing, I enjoy photography and dog sports. (We have 3 dogs and 2 cats)
I really look forward to getting to know you and being part of the colony!

hey there david! i can only imagine it's called a colony because with all the forums, we're basically like a little village with different sections and things! (that's how i imagine it, at least. either that or because we're like an infestation of bookworms in a library.)
can't wait to read your work; enjoy your time here!

Hi David, welcome. Your writing sounds fun, and dog sports? I'm intrigued. I do dog agility (well my collie does; I just run around like a dafty, trying to keep up.)

Colony? There are little pieces of us all over the place, but when we come together we are like birds on an island - all busy creating and hoping our babies will successfully fledge.

I love the bird analogy. Does this mean I get to eat the chicks that fall out of someone else's nest? I'm on a high-protein diet. Chirp.

A very warm welcome to the colony, @David B

Nice to have you here with us and my apologies as I'm only just catching up with this forum.

Hope you enjoy Litopia and please do get involved as soon as you’re ready to.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.

Hey David, nice to meet you... also new to this colony LOL - funny you mentioned darkness... for whatever reason my stories tend to shift in that direction and I have to reel them back in. Again nice to meet you!
