• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hi hi!

I am Fraser, a 32-year-old he/they queer wannabe writer. I live and work in the Pacific Northwest. I split my time between a studio in downtown Vancouver (so-called British Columbia) & a cottage in a remote rainforest fjord of northwest Vancouver Island where I work as a nurse. Nursing pays the bills but writing keeps me from totally losing my mind.

I'm a slow reader but I enjoy literary fiction, science fiction, magical realism, and often fantasy. I especially love stories with queer characters or from voices and experiences that traditionally are not represented in mainstream media. Some of my favourite authors in the CanLit genre are Eden Robinson, Shyam Selvadurai, and Nalo Hopkinson. I love magical realism and am a big fan of Isabel Allende. I also enjoy Leslie Marman Silko, Marlon James, Gloria Naylor, Amitav Ghosh, Samuel R. Delany, Octavia Butler, Junot Diaz, Toni Morrison, Haruki Murakami, and Ted Chiang.

I've written a few short stories & have been working on a novel-length project that I've finished a few drafts of & am continuing to edit/revise. This is my first time really connecting with other writers.

I love to eat! My favourite foods/flavours often come from Central America and Mexico. My favourite drinks are black coffee with honey, horchata, and earl grey tea.

It's nice to be here.

Hi @frasermacp and welcome! The setting of your cottage sounds idylic, and just right for writing!

I'm sure you'll find lots of like-minded writers here on Litopia – we're a very friendly bunch. Once you get to know the place, and feel comfortable about sharing your work, or critiquing others, you could check out the Workshops.

You can also submit the first 700 words of your own work to Pop-Ups if you'd like some advice on the beginning. That's on YouTube, Sunday evenings from 5pm (UK time). I'm not sure what that is in Vancouver, or even in the remote rainforest, but the beauty of YouTube is you can catch up with it any time. There's excellent advice every week on writing and publishing in general.

I hope you're making yourself at home. Any questions, please get in touch.

Hi there, and welcome. I'm in the south of France, but I have a cousin in your neck of the woods. She and her husband moved (donkeys years ago) to Cortez Island and built their own home. Sadly, they've now moved to Vancouver. I say sadly because I never got a chance to visit them on the island. By the way, I like your reading list!
Litopia is a wonderful place. I've never met such a supportive and knowledgeable bunch of people before. I'm sure you'll like it.

A belated welcome to the colony, @frasermacp

Nice to have you here. Hope you enjoy Litopia and do get involved as soon as you’re ready to.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.
