• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hi everyone

I came to the colony via a chap I know as Martini Rossi and a woman called Barbara C (they know who they are even if I can’t yet find them on here). I’ve been writing all my life. Came very close to novel publication twice. Won a couple of short story competitions at Winchester Writers Festival. Short listed for the Hookline Prize (open to MA students). Recently completed the CBC course - How to Edit and Pitch Your Novel - with fellow writers mentioned above.

Mine is a story about eight Old Birds who are called together to scatter the ashes of Sybil their rowing coach and friend along the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta course … a sort of aquatic Calender Girls meets The Canterbury Tales since at each of the eight progress points along the course, reluctant cox Pandora recounts a tale about the ‘faffing pilgrims’ in the boat with her.

It’s aimed at older women and those who love them: a generation of us who have lived and loved longer than any previous generation with very little idea how to best use all this ‘extra time’. We can’t all be Helen Mirren after all.

Well, if you have a mother or sister or friend over say 50, I’m writing for her - and you, so would really like to hear from you and to respond in kind.

Here’s to a great Litopia journey for us all …

Greetings.

I am 47, so not quite crinkly enough to be your target readership, though it sounds great and I'd love to read some.

RG : 47 is a great age! I miss it. Once I get to grips with the technical side of this I’ll be liaising or whatever we call it in the colony.

Hi @Karen W

A warm welcome to the colony. Your story sounds very engaging and like it could be a lot of fun.

Best thing is to get stuck right in. Check out the how-to thread link below which will point you in the direction of some of the key areas of colony activity.

Hope you really enjoy it here.

Hi @Karen W and welcome! Shame about the near misses, but your latest story sounds great and I wish you success with it. There's lots to do around here, so make yourself at home and join in with anything that appeals. I hope your friends turn up soon!

Jonny hi and thank you. I’ll get there I’m sure. Enjoying it already!

Hi shipmate @Karen W - welcome aboard the good ship, Litopia. You sound lovely and your writing credentials are as impressive as your novel's engaging subject matter. This MartiniRosso guy (whoever he is!) deserves a real pat on the back for introducing you to Litopia. Sounds like my kind of guy! :)
