• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hi there,

I'm Laura and I live in Borneo. I work as an academic editor and English language tutor, and my husband and I raise three kids at the edge of the rainforest. This is fun, but also a lot of work, so I have to find time for writing whenever I can. I like reading any genre, I am not at all picky in that respect, but it does need to be well written because I spend so much time reading student essays.

I am looking forward to exploring this platform and getting to know everyone!

Hi Laura! Borneo. I have never met anyone living in Borneo. Welcome

Hi @Aethalope , a warm welcome to the colony.

Nice to have you here.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.

Welcome- we have quite a few eastern hemisphere types, so you'll be among friends. Are you in Sabah, Sarawak or Kalimantan? I had a fun trip there a few years ago. Must be amazing to live in the forest!

And we’ve recently started a regular Huddle specifically for writers who find our original weekly Saturday Huddles at 5pm UK time too difficult to attend. “Huddle South” is currently scheduled on a monthly basis – next one will be Wednesday 6th March – at 8:00am UK time, which will be in 15:00 Jakarta (WITA). We may go to a twice-a-month schedule if there's enough demand.

Hope you can join us, @Aethalope !

Hi @Aethalope

Welcome :) Borneo. Wow. Orang Utans. Colugos. What an amazing place to live.

Did you meet Conor Nolan when you studied fisheries in UCC? He's big in fisheries in Ireland and a great pal of mine.

I write fantasy. Looking forward to reading your stories :)

The name does ring a bell, although we were just lowly postgrads and didn't get about much. Is he with BIM? We spent a fabulous two weeks at their fisheries college in Castletownbere learning to not die at sea

Hi @Aethalope welcome! Would love to see your writing and hear more about your life at the edge of the rainforest! I'm a SFF reader/writer too and in one of those times zones suited for the Huddle South. :)

Hi there! I would love to join a Huddle South, but I believe that is available for full members only? Our local currency is not doing all that well at the moment and I am having to cut back on my overseas spending. My poor ringgits aren't stretching as far as they once did

Ah yes, I understand. Well, the only constant is change, so we never know what the future brings. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing you around the colony! :)
