Basic
Hi! I'm Miya. I live in Wisconsin (USA) with my husband and our three teenagers. We have two rescue dogs, a German Shepherd and a Shiba Inu/ChowChow mix. We're only a few miles from the shore of Lake Michigan, located about halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee.
When I'm not writing, I'm usually drinking coffee or on the run to get the kids from school or off to their next music lesson. I was diagnosed with Lupus in the spring of 2022, and while it's made a mess of a lot of my life plans for once we're "empty nesters," it does give me more time for daydreaming new worlds and writing them.
I am a resin artist when my stamina and pain levels allow, making dice, jewelry, figurines, runes, and other shinies.
Growing up in a household where I was the odd one out for being an avid reader, I ended up reading Clive Barker and Harlequin novels when I was far too young, which really may explain a lot of what I write now. I didn't read a lot of the "classic" kids literature until when reading them to my children, but by the time I reached middle school, I lucked out and had several school and public librarians who made sure my arms were always full of fantasy novels. Terry Brooks' Shannara series is dear to me having been raised in his hometown. (We won't talk about the tv show.)
I mostly read romance, though I shy away from the dark romance and red-flag filled main characters that tend to top the charts of the last year or so. Fanfiction is one of my guilty pleasures, and no matter how busy life gets and other books I am actively reading, there aways seems to be a Drarry romance that pulls me back in or a friend updates a chapter of their Twific from a decade past, and then I'm immersed in those worlds again.
The areas of writing that interest me.... While I mostly write romance, it's fantasy that really pulls from my soul. Writing my Asylum series, I could feel the red grains running through my fingers as Roseen dug her hands into the baker's barrels in the marketplace. I know the smell of the incense in her goddess' temple and can walk the paths of her imaginary town despite it never having existed except in some bardic realm and in my own head. In "Saving the Storm Mage," the entire story played out in my head as a movie I could pause, rotate, and play with in my mind, merely needing to transcribe it as it played out over and over in a loop through my thoughts. Now, while I work through my first round of content edits on "Level or Live," I find myself diving back into the bardic waters and letting the world take over so that I can evoke those details that matter in world building. Sometimes, you have to get the barebones structure up so you can come back and decorate later.
I was first published in 2010 after winning a contract from The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing House for my paranormal romance, "The Changeling's Champion." I've gone on to do a mix of indie and self-publishing of over forty titles, mostly learning that the stories that mean something to me aren't always my popular titles, but they are the ones that people talk about when they meet me at author events. Yes, it also amused me when my alma mater bought copies of several of my books for their library, not realizing the spicy content.
My tastes? Coffee. Nicaraguan when I can get it, otherwise I'm fond of Deathwish Coffee Company's Valhalla Java. High caffeine + low acid = win.
I'm also fond of tea, particularly a lovely cup of Irish Breakfast from the Chicago Tea House.
Fresh bread is the way to my heart, but being gluten free has made that difficult. My handmade gluten free sourdough technique is coming along. I make a lovely roast lamb with fennel served over sourdough.
My friends say I manifest glitter and call me Pixie because of it, so be mindful of the sparkles. Glitter gets everywhere....
I look forward to being here.
