• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence
    • Don't take offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hello everyone,

I live in the Portland, Oregon, area, where the damp and cloudy climate encourages a fantastical view of life.

My reading tastes are broad. This week, I'm reading Octavia's Brood, but recently I finished The Magnificent Ambersons, and What to Read and Why by Francine Prose will be next. Mostly, I like beautiful prose and stories that look deeply into human life, regardless of genre.

I enjoy writing fantasy stories about people who resolve their own identity issues while making a place for themselves in the world, and maybe saving the world while they're at it. I have finished writing the final draft of a high fantasy novel, in which the protagonist discovers who he is, and how decisions made in past lives led to his current situation. After battling people who have been corrupted by power, he gains power and must learn to use it wisely. The sequel will deal with this issue of having power, using it wisely, and not allowing fear of losing it to unhinge oneself. Along with his adventures, he finds true love in the arms of a sword-wielding alpha warrior princess, and he does save the world with her help.

My current WIP is about a middle-aged American businessman trying to raise funds for his company, which is in danger of failing. On the plane to a meeting with potential investors, he meets a woman who throws herself at him. When he arrives at his destination, he finds that she has bribed the hotel desk clerk to move him to a suite next to hers, and of course she seduces him. He thinks she may be insane and does not know what to make of the wings attached to her back, and of how she can fold and unfold them at will. You guessed it, she really is a Pixie, but she is a Pixie who lives in the real world, so she has advanced degrees in finance and computer science, and she works in high tech. The story goes from there with appearances by Count Dracula, a gang of evil werewolves who use social media to destroy people's minds, and many twists and turns, and a high tech gadget that lets people connect their brains directly to the Internet.

My career has been in book publishing and marketing, mostly working with small juvenile nonfiction publishers and tech startups. It's all on LinkedIn. I have a nonfiction book that I co-edited coming out from ALA Editions, which publishes professional books for librarians and information professionals. Release was delayed by the pandemic, but it should be out by summer of 2022.

Food and drink? I like nearly everything except fast food.

I look forward to participating in the colony.

Hi Peyton, sounds like you and I have very similar taste in fiction. I'm working on a sci-fi fantasy saga that plays with some of the same ideas as your recently finished story. Good luck on your next novel, which sounds equally exciting. Looking forward to reading your work!

Hello, @Peyton Stafford and welcome! Your books sound very interesting. Whatever your favourite genre, I'm sure you'll find lots of like-minded writers here on Litopia. Once you get to know the place, and feel comfortable about sharing your work, or critiquing others, you could check out the Workshops.

You can also submit the first 700 words of your own work to Pop-Ups if you'd like some advice on the beginning. That's on YouTube, Sunday evenings from 5pm (UK time). I'm not sure what that is in the US but the beauty of YouTube is you can catch up with it any time. There's excellent advice every week on writing and publishing in general.

I'm one of the Guardians on Litopia. If you have any questions, please get in touch — happy to help any time. Look forward to seeing you around the Colony! :)

Welcome @Peyton Stafford. Hope you enjoy Litopia.

It’s extremely friendly here so do feel free to get involved as soon as you’re ready.

Here's a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.

Thank you. I dove in and am having a great time.

Hi Peyton, We've already sort of met. I look forward to reading your work. We share an interest in magical women. Admire your career. I hope that resource book gets published despite Covid. You will bring us a great professional perspective. Being in Ireland I think we are bonded by rain and slugs. Welcome.
