Ok they turned down my book, Equivox, but sent me a list of German agents who might be interested. And it was in favour of THIS guy. I cant be mad. read all the way to the bottom there are some interesting offers. remember there are alternatives to the bad guys.
As a small independent publisher, we do a lot of things that we hope matter to the larger world of letters - and to you, our readers. We run competitions, we put on classes, we now and again try to speak up about big issues in the industry and the world. It’s a privilege to be able to do all that - and it’s often fun and rewarding. But! There’s still nothing quite like bringing an actual paper book into the world
That’s Gonzalo C. Garcia looking at the first copies of his wonderful new novel Telenovela - and let me tell you, we felt very proud and happy to be able to show them to him.
This book has been years in the making - a labour of love and much more. A difficult story that has to be told - and told right now. It’s about complicity with authoritarianism - and I’m sure you can see why that has such pressing contemporary relevance. But it also offers real hope. It’s also a book set during the final days of Pinochet’s murderous regime in Chile; which is a very useful reminder that all bad things also come to an end.
It’s a book that tells us that we’ll get through this.
More than that, Telenovela is also a fine work of art. It’s humane and personal, as well as political. It’s real in all kinds of uncomfortable ways - but that also means that it is full of love and joy.
I’ll save review coverage until Telenovela is officially release at the end of November (not least because we are still nervously awaiting those reviews!) - but here’s what the wonderful Maureen Freely has just told us about the book:
“I laughed, and I cried, but most of all, I held my breath, mesmerised by this author who never puts a foot wrong, even as he walks a tightrope between the quotidian and the surreal, the tragic and the absurd, the hunger games of politics and the dreams that kill us first.”
AL Kennedy has also called it:
A strangely hopeful and deeply beautiful novel, steeped in an understanding of why a population would largely accept a fascist unreality over creativity and life.
It’s special

Gonzalo has signed a lot of our special limited edition subscriber copies, a lot of regular subscriber copies, a lot of copies for pre-orders and even a few extra for people who want to order one right now!

We’ve been busily packing them up and have gradually started sending them out.
There are hundreds of books and only two of us, so if you’re still eagerly waiting for a copy, we’re very grateful for your patience. We’re hoping to have most of them on the way by the publication date of 26 November - so watch the post and get ready for a wonderful literary experience.
Talking of which…

We’ve got extra stock of our lovely Ghost pocketbooks in for Chriistmas..
We’ve noticed quite a few people have started buying them in our store again - which seems like a profoundly wise course of action to us. So we thought we should make sure we have plenty available - and remind readers of this letter that they are fine books to own - and lovely things to give away.
We’re selling them in bundles for the special price of £11.68*. They’ll arrive beautifully wrapped. They’re primed to make anyone who receives them feel very delighted indeed.
You can also buy them individually in our store.
And!
We will be very happy to help you arrange a subscription as a present too. (Details here - just drop a line - info@galleybeggaar.co.uk if you have questions about arranging timings/ books to go to particular addresses.)
(*I know! We knocked off a percentage and that’s the figure that emerged. But the important thing here is not the decimal point madness - it is that this is - we hope - very good value!)
Okay! More news soon. Thank you for reading. Look out for your copy of Telenovela. I hope you love it too.
Fondly,
Sam
[]PS In case you missed it last time, here’s another special thing about Telenovela:
]We're very proud to be the first publisher to have the Books By People stamp - and it feels very fitting that it should be on Telenovela; a book about the fight against authoritarianism and all the associated nonsense

The Galley Beggar Press short story prize is now closed. Thank you to everyone that entered. More than a thousand entries again! Wonderful. We’re looking forward to reading them…
PPPPS Substack again
Thank you to everyone who has also read my Substack. It’s still going well. Really well! Whoopee!
It’s already started making a bit of money for Galley Beggar - a blessing, after five years of increasing prodution costs - but I’m also very keen to keep most of it free and accessible so that all our newsletter readers should be able to enjoy it too. You can find my ‘stack’ here.
I’ve written about the fight against AI in publishing at some length. (I’ve done it more than once, in fact!)
Recently, I’ve also written about the splendid charity Bookbanks.
PPPPPS Another reminder of the podcast I appear on with the wonderful Lori Feathers. We’ve had some amazing guests recently and fascinating conversations. The most recent episode features a fascinating conversation with Brad Fox about his crazy experience in Peru during lockdown.
PPPPPS The Good Solder
The usual reminder that we’ve produced an ebook edition of The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford.
If you haven’t read it, now is your chance. Ford’s novel is superb; a shocking and constantly surprising tale of marital strife, sexual intrigue, deep deception, fathomless mystery and tragic death. It’s wrong-footing, deceptive, brilliantly plotted … and a masterpiece. One of the finest novels of the twentieth century.
PPPPPPS You can find us on Bluesky if you’re keen for more book talk and more pictures of our dog, Sirius.
PPPPPPPS Thanks for reading all the way down here. The Charli XCX record with John Cale is making me think I might learn to love her music, after all. Also that the Wuthering Heights film is going to be every bit as restrained as I’m hoping.,
