Modern eerie, speculative. The completed novel has a strong tang of eerie, but is not horror. Or it is, but the horror is entirely real.

A short story in a competition is modern horror, and ends in tragedy.

Hmm...yes, I find that there's enough horror in my real life that I don't feel the need to escape to it in books. ;) I absolutely love the genre for its power...and I absolutely can't read it any more.
