• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Here in the Northern hemisphere the feeble light is ever darkening and, quicker than you can say Jack Frost, it will be St Lucie’s Day; the moment in the calendar when the world's whole sap is sunk. I love that poem, I always return to it at this time of year.

There is something atavistic about the urge to tell stories, to recount bygone memories at this time of year. Our ancestors understood this perhaps better than we do.

If narrative structure is in some sense an attempt to make sense of the jumbled chaos of our own lives, then storytelling is its natural expression. A glimpse into another mind, another world of experience, another time. Different to us, yet with strong resonance. How magical.

I’d like to invite you to share a story or two from your own past this month. It doesn’t have to be earth-shaking. An insight, a moment of wonder, a treasure of some sort. Or perhaps something darker.

Blog posts aren’t essays. They should be short, to the point, and not over-thought. They should be fun to do, not just one more item on your to-do list.

So please – this month of December – share a few seasonal memories with us.

If you haven’t yet started your Litopia blog, now’s a good time to do it. Full instructions are here.
