• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Okay, Litopia hive mind (I do miss the days when we were all 'geniuses'):

Recently started submitting work through Submittable and, following the inevitable rejections, have been instructed to update my submission status on Duotrope. While I thought there was a free subscription level, it seems it's only a 'free trial' followed by $50 per year (or a monthly option).

Just wondering if anyone here has experience with Duotrope and whether it's worth paying for?

We all remain geniuses. I didnt find it worth paying for. Query Tracker seems to be more oriented towards what agents want and need so theoretically makes them more accessible to writers submitting. My conclusion anyway.

I used it for a bit when I was writing a lot of short stories a few years ago. I found it quite good for tracking and researching markets/magazines. I'm not writing a lot of short stories these days, but I do curate a list of submission calls for SpecFicNZ's newsletter and I get those mostly from Published to Death's list of calls and a bunch of different Facebook Groups (like this one). If I was planning on writing and submitting a lot of short stories, I'd probably consider resigning up again, especially if I planned to write short stories that weren't to a specific theme/prompt.

Thank you. That puts a new light on things and why I didnt find it very useful. I never even got a reply back from a query w duotrope.

Thanks, Nikky. Your experience is gold!
