• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

WTF

I read the Elfstone books when I was a kid. If I recall, the choosing ceremony consisted of all the young elves walking by the tree. Then the tree would dip her branches, touch the chosen, and say their name.

Did I miss the part in the book where all the young elves first have to run through the forest blindfolded in a Hunger Gamesque competition to reach the Elcrys tree first?

While girls were seldom chosen, it wasn't a freaking crime. I'll have to get the book with Amberle in it but .... I'm pretty sure MTV has really fubared something that was compelling enough all on it's own.

It's a shame that the image of a girl running through the forest blindfolded and stepping on the back of one of her fellow elves is considered better TV than a tree dipping it's branches to touch a girl on the shoulder and speaking her name.

In the story, it wasn't Amberle's manipulation of events that put her in place to be chosen. The tree chose her. That was the point.
