Just finished reading Toffee, by Sarah Crossan, and now I'm doubly keen to write a novel in verse. Toffee is contemporary YA, sparsely written (downright terse in places), and simply beautiful. Allison has run away from home, and finds an abandoned house to squat in. Except the house isn't abandoned--it is owned by Marla, an elderly woman with dementia. Allison and Marla strike up a strange friendship, helping each other navigate their loneliness and changing circumstances. The story, written in verse, is heartbreaking and hopeful. Highly recommended.
