• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

On 27th Feb I will be going to a reading and Masterclass with Roddy Doyle and E.M Reapy, winner of the 2017 Rooney Prize. Doyle will be reading from this latest novel, Smile, which came out last year and tackles the subject of child abuse and its psychological aftermath. Smile is Doyle’s 11th novel and was chosen by Irish Times readers as their favourite Irish fiction of 2017. E.M. Reapy’s debut novel, Red Dirt, was awarded the 2017 Rooney Prize. A novel about the new wave of emigration, it is set in Australia, in the rootless world of backpacker hostels and migrant labour on fruit farms and in factories. Red Dirt also won Newcomer of the Year at the 2016 Book Awards and was shortlisted for the 2017 Kate O’Brien Award.

We all know of Roddy Doyle, of course….
But has anyone read EM Reapy? Any comments on either author?

I honestly haven't heard of either author. But at least the Masterclass is by someone who's won an award or written something.
