• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hi all,

I'm Rachael, I live in Somerset but I'm from Yorkshire. I joined a few weeks ago after watching much of the back catalogue of Pop-Up Submissions (which I love). I'm a bit scared of commenting and asking for feedback at the moment, but loving the writing so far in the forums.

I'm currently doing the final edit of my contemporary fantasy novel, Lupercalia after completing a MA in Eng Lit last year and a degree in Eng Lit the year b4 (as a very mature student!).

Looking forward to this week's pop-up submissions which I usually have to watch the next day owing to timings, but hoping to join live one Sunday.

Rachael :)

Hi Rachel,

Thank you for sharing a bit about yourself. You have found a safe place to share. Stick around.

Hello, Rachael and welcome! Glad you've already found the writing forums and PopUps. There are lots of fantasy writers here so I'm sure you'll fit right in. I also completed my MA (in Writing for Young People) at Bath Spa – Newton St Loe. Such a beautiful place. I loved it. Between the castle and lake, and having to write write write every day for a year, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven :)

I'm one of the Guardians on Litopia. If you have any questions, please get in touch — happy to help any time. Look forward to seeing you around the Colony!

Thank you for the lovely welcome.
Funny how BSU is such a small uni and 3 of us attended, although BSU having a focus on the creative arts it makes perfect sense. I didn't get to go very often to the physical uni as I did my MA in the second year of Covid and several lockdowns, but it was a fantastic course. I was introduced to Surrealist women writers and artists and fell in love with them - I wrote my MA thesis on posthuman representations in Leonora Carrington's oeuvre, but totally adore Remedios Varo and so many other Surrealist women

Welcome Rachael,

Nice to have you here. Hope you enjoy Litopia and do get involved as soon as you’re ready.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.

@RBurnett

Hi, Jonny

Thanks for the welcome and I'll make sure to read the guides, thank you

I have! Aired this past week. Dark fantasy called Red Deceit. But it's a secret between you and me. Not a soul knows. ;)
I missed yours, cos I was on my way back from flogging 123 cakes in a field in Shropshire. Will have to watch it retrospectively.

I've been on Pop-ups, RBurnett. Great fun, highly recommended. Some scoundrel beat my record-breaking high score by one point on the final day of the month, though. It was like the Olympics.

OMG, sooo annoying! Did anything come of your submission with such a high score?

Hi,

I did my BA with the OU and my MA with Bath Spa University. What about you?
BA began at Reed College. Dropped out to write Great American Novel. Went back to school at Portland State University. Dropped out to play in a rock and roll band. More jobs. Director of State-Level program to help multi-handicapped blind people find employment... Researcher into obscure scholarly texts... on and on. BA in Religious Studies and MA in same. The latter from University of Chicago.

Wow. Impressive. You could write a book about that!!:D
