• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Hi Litopians. I just discovered this site and the accompanying YouTube channel whilst compiling my "Agents to Query" list. (Confession: I've never used whilst in a sentence before.) I'm waiting for feedback from my beautiful beta readers on my second draft of my first spec fic novel. I'm a recovering screenwriter turned novelist, and I'm so happy to have made the switch two years ago. I sit firmly in the spec fic / SFF genre, with the exception of horror, gross stuff, or pandemic-type stories. I work as a digital VFX artist and am fascinated by the changes to society brought on by advancing technology. Latest book I loved, cried and laughed over... "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir.

Hello from another newbie

Hi LJ and welcome. Glad you found us, and have already enjoyed Pop-Ups. Check out the Workshops too if you'd like some feedback on your work. You may even find more beta readers.

I'm one of the guardians on Litopia so if you have any questions, please get in touch. I look forward to seeing you around the Colony!

Welcome LJ.

Nice to have you here. Hope you enjoy Litopia and do get involved as soon as you’re ready.

This is a good place to check out (How-to guide) to see a lot of what goes on in the colony.

If anything is unclear do please contact me and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.

@LJ Beck

@LJ Beck I'm listening to Project Hail Mary but only up to chapter 2. Loving it :) Going to convince my physic-loving son to listen (I hope). He's a manga reader - want him to branch out.
It (Hail Mary) only gets better and better. I’d never heard of a manga reader, so I looked it up. Is it all/mostly comics? Seems it’s also free? Interesting. Well, enjoy the book and let me know what you think when you’re done!

Kia ora @LJ Beck! Where are you in Aotearoa? I'm in Selwyn District. Have you joined SpecFicNZ yet? We've got a virtual writing retreat coming up on the 18th of this month...a great chance to meet other NZ speculative authors, with workshops by Gail Carriger and myself as well as social sessions. We also do monthly virtual workshops (free for members) and a weekly Wednesday night write club among other things.

Maybe it's more accurate to say he's a reader of manga. @Izuku Midoriya probably can explain manga better than I can, I'm highly unqualified! I'm almost finished PHM. It's awesome. I love love love it (get it?), lol.
Manga is the Japanese graphic novel, and popular mangas turn into anime. They range in audiences from childremn to too adult for me and everything in between. It's not helpful to compare manga to comics or anime to cartoons because, while cartoons in the US are often either childish or highly adult, manga and anime are simply a method of telling any kind of story. And manga can be just as profound as any other medium for story-telling.

And yes, I'm a fan :D

Ahhhh..... thank you for that fab explanation! That's veeeery interesting. I'm only familiar with the amine that's made it to main-stream, unfortunately. Seems the format's got quite wide range to explore. Cool!

Hi Robinne. We're on the same island! I'm in Nelson. I haven't been to the Selwyn District, so I looked it up and it seems that it's in the mountain range? Cool! Thanks for the link to SpecFicNZ. Shame I just missed the retreat. Wow, a whole group here dedicated to spec fic! Awesome. I'll definitely check it out.

Ah, I haven't been to Nelson for a few years--such a lovely area! Selwyn runs all the way to Arthur's Pass, but I'm down on the Canterbury Plains in Kirwee. But I'm 45 minutes from the mountains and 45 minutes from the beach--can't beat it!
