Or they think, "I know you asked for X amount, but if you read as far as Y, that's when it really kicks off. You'll love it from there."
Or
"I know it's great. I spent the whole Christmas hols writing it. And I know you'll love it too so I sent you the whole thing."
Or
"Comparative books? Oh, I don't read any. I don't want them to affect my style. What I have read though are crap compared to mine. Read it and you'll see."
