I'm starting to read Wolf Brother to my kids tonight (We just finished The Children of Green Knowe and the River at Green Knowe, thanks for the rec; they were completely absorbed. Great stories!)
Lucy Boston is good, isn't she? The other writer you might experiment with is E Nesbit. Obv there’s Railway Chld etc. But she also wrote others that (esp if read aloud) are still accessible to today’s children, and give them an insight into childhood as it was a century ago../...
.../... She’s one of those authors who (like Michelle) can effortlessly talk to children in a voice that is open and plain and honest. Particularly rare for Victorian writers.
We've Five Children And It waiting in the wings (and a follow on by Kate Saunders, Five Children on the western Front). Although they are completely hooked by Wolf Brother, so I have a feeling we may have to finish the series before we move onto anything else
