News Semantic drift: What's your journey?

Having spent the last few years teaching A level linguistics, this is an area we've explored in our classes. Lakoff and Johnson's seminal work Metaphors We Live By (first published 1980) investigated the use of metaphors in our language and how we use them to make sense of abstract concepts...

I Need Your Help, Please – When Were You Last Enchanted?

Certain authors have a voice which enchants me...actually gives me a shiver of anticipation by their very prose style...especially those where there is a whiff of otherworldlness and deft lyricism combined with humour: Helen Dunmore Margaret Atwood Kate Atkinson Joanne Harris Angela Carter...

What's the point of a traditional publishing deal, anyway?

Unless @AgentPete has a better idea, I guess the simplest way would be to start an announcement thread in Cafe Life with details and link :)

What's the point of a traditional publishing deal, anyway?

Oooh, congratulations — tell us more! How did it come about and how does it work? Do you keep the rights, but they get a commission for anything you sell through them? Or is there some other arrangement? Which press are we talking about? (I know — questions, questions!!) Please plug it in...

What's the point of a traditional publishing deal, anyway?

This has been a fascinating discussion, many thanks to @AgentPete @Roz Morris @BrianY @TimRees and everyone else who has contributed their thoughts and expertise on the subject so far! Yes, being spotted in the dense forest of books by passing readers online is hit and miss, unless you have the...

What's the point of a traditional publishing deal, anyway?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, @AgentPete — always illuminating! Very true! I suspect that's what's leading to the frustration from writers who are finding more online/public-facing marketing is expected of them than they would like from the entity taking a percentage of their earnings...
