In an interview she says that her friends hate her because she always knew what was going to happen in any movie or series. When she started to write she realised what she valued most in a writer was the ability to surprise her. That's something I can really relate to. I realise that is what I look for when I read the first 750 words of a book. The voice that says I will take you to a world that you cannot imagine. I know there are readers that just want the familiar. And publishing caters to them because it is easier to pump out romance books, cozy mysteries etc that meet that need. Much easier than figuring out new trends, zeitgeist or taking risks. But there are plenty of readers who want the challenging, the risky, the surprising. After all life and people constantly surprise us- if we allow.
