Alternative history, paranormal. . .

With regards to fantasy, my understanding is that speculative fiction is always based in the real world, but not quite the real world as we know it. In other words, the author base the story on 'what if this happened in our world'/'what if people/non-human animals/plants etc were like this in our world . . .
