I've had a submission out to a publisher I really really want to be with since March. They said it would take 3 months and after that time you can enquire. So I did. I was told that my submission was with the commissioning editor and I'd hear in 1-2 weeks. It's now 3 weeks. Last time I "pushed" a publisher I got immediately rejected so I'm worried. What would you do? Wait? (Waiting is really doing my head in). I'm tempted to start resubmitting but then...if they do come back...Oh how I hate this.

Personally, if you really want to be with them, I'd wait. If they have only had it since March, that's really not very long! Good luck, anyway.

Yes - I suppose I just wanted to "let off steam". Thanks Marc. I certainly don't want to hassle them.

Waiting is the hardest, but you've already got time invested. As Marc says, it's not all that long. Meanwhile, fingers, toes and eyes all crossed for you

Yep. I agree with Marc--a nice drink to calm the nerves while you wait. I like something salty with my G&Ts, too--peanuts are good, but heck, if you're potentially that close to an offer, I'd splash out for pistachios :). Good luck!

Ah, okay. Yes, the waiting is worse when you know you are almost there! Have a large G&T, it's the only antidote.
Thanks all - yes a large G&T hits to spot perfectly :) . Ah....what this submission lark does to a person's nerves is indescribable.

"If you're potentially that close..." That's the problem! To get to Commissioning Editor, in this publishing house, you have to get through a couple of levels of readings first. So it sounds good - but I've been there before (with them) and then got rejected on the grounds that they'd just published something similar to mine

I have known a lot of people in business over the years who have always said that if you want a quick answer it is 'no'. However, if you are prepared to give them time to consider it in the cold light of day it they may decide it can be a 'yes'. With meetings, emails, reports to write and countless other things getting in the way it is probably taking longer to get to your submission than they originally thought. It is nothing bad, there is just other stuff to deal with.

Try to relax as everyone above says and hopefully everything will fall into place just nicely. :)

Yeah. I'm mixing my G&T now...@Carol Rose and @AliG, perhaps you could use one, too. ;)

Sounds like an excuse for a party...I'd invite you all here, but at the moment I guarantee your weather is better than mine. Not G&T weather at all here.

The song I'm Waiting For The Man was written about waiting to buy drugs from a dealer. As performed by The Velvet Underground, the lyrics contain two lines that I always think of when waiting to hear back about a submission I've made to an agent or publisher:

He's never early, he's always late
First thing you learn is that you always gotta wait
