Hi everyone:

I´m trying to rename my bully whose name was Spike during the first draft but it seems too American and I´m looking for something with more of a British feel to it. Any ideas? What do you think about Spike? too common? overused?
So, this is for a tween novel, and the character is a piece of work ( think Ace from Stand by Me or the baddies from Karate Kid). But he also goes to a wealthy kid´s school and bullies the MC for not being as good as them. He is a minor character, but important enough to give him a name. I had also called him the Evan´s boy, but then someone mentioned that Evans is a very popular surname and would not make sense if he is showing off his lineage.
What do you think?
Go!:)

You know, I thought the name Spike suited the character. Didn't think it was too American at all; did a reader mention that it was? How's the book going? :)

Yeah, well, Spike as a nickname he´d be called by his buddies. I don´t know if it´s used in the UK, if you say so, then i´ll keep it! No, no one mentioned it, it just occured to me.
It´s coming along, I just sometimes feel overwhelmed by the amount of information I have and the amount of text i´ve written over the years. I´m trying to bring order to it, but my brain doesn´t want to cooperate!

There's Spike Milligan (Terence Alan "Spike" Milligan). He was a British-Irish writer, comedian etc. Think you can just keep it. Don't give your self more headaches than you need to! ;D

I think you need to get to the end of the full first draft. I'm doing that now. So easy to get overwhelmed. :(

Oh my goodness, overwhelmed is an understatement. Good luck! If you need any help, i´m here! Something that has helped me loads is homeopathy and back flowers for concentration. But, this is seriously the hardest thing i´ve ver done.

Nicknames would often be derived from a surname, like Wooders from Woodhouse or Monty from Montford, Lets from Lethwaite etc. or from attributes; Puds for a greedy guy, Slugger if cricket star etc. or misc like Ponky or Binky

How about Basher Bates?

characters doing their own thing
When your characters start doing their own thing it is often a sign that they are becoming real in your mind and to me that is a good thing.
When you look at piece you have written and say, "No, my character would never say that." you know that you now know your character better than when you wrote it.

Cain
Ryker
Axl

Eli
Jack

Zed
Onig (Gino backwards)
Those are keepers for tough bad guys. Especially Ryker, Cain, Max. Probably not what quillwitch is looking for. I personally like Mal as a prefix to a proper name e.g. Malford but probably not for the quillwitch character.
