A lower beast?

There's rivets.
And there's Levi's rivets.

Vulcan's forge, Man as Hephaestus; and by that I mean Mankind. It's mythic, protean. Makes me want to run, makes me feel invincible.

Someone had to think of it, say it, write it. They want our money, but so do we want that, if we're aiming to sell our books one day.

What are the advert stories that ever struck gold, found that place such that, even if you didn't buy, won't buy, the story's stuck with you? The epics? The spine tinglers?

And what is the giraffe if not a fable? Money to a hotel in Nairobi...and its magical beast giraffes. I like the wart hogs too :) The music gets me here...makes me wanna cry. Something far off, not quite lost to us...not quite.

One day I'll lose, he says
Don't worry, I say....you'll never lose.

It's that, isn't it? The killer line. Love. Mortality and immortality. Declining physical power, but rising numinous power. Loved ones gone but still with us

They know their archetypes. Master tools of the writing trade.

Funny. I haven't ever seen a Levi's commercial like that. I don't think it would have gotten much play in the US -- a different image of what hot toughness I think.

As an ex adman, I do find most of today’s offering pretty indifferent. Squalid, even. Most of the classic campaigns, even those still running, seem to have originated at least a decade or two ago. But maybe I’m just showing my age…

A different image. In what way? Why's that? Interesting. Tell me more @Amber?

Seriously ... well okey dokey. The US glorifies cowboys. I was trying to think of a time or circumstance where we might get off on the blue collar type of industrial thing and ... I don't think so. Motorcycles though ... yes ... but then biking leathers...

Although, as individuals, I'm sure we all have our own idea of toughness and hotness regardless of where we're from. I'm not patriotic or religious but I notice stereotypes.

Not the railroads, then, or motor trade; Chicago and Detroit, or the oil wells and nodding donkeys? Brit stereotyping of the US :)

I'm not a very good American at all. I've always been ready to jump ship and haven't watched all that many commercials. Even when I was a kid I read during commercials. But my guess would be -- oil wells = Dallas = cowboy hats, money, and trucks .... as the image Americans prefer of their oil wells... you mean the oil dereks.... I don't think so again ... working on an oil derek doesn't smack of money or success ... owning the oil derek does ... again ... dimly lit bars, tight jeans, cowboy hats, big steaks and baked potatoes, scotch..... and Detroit is sort of a wasteland economically and I can only say I don't personally recall it ever being considered glamorous or sexy or a mark of success to work on a Detroit assembly line ... now to be a car engineer .... that would be different. But an oil man doesn't see a rivet, may not get his hands dirty at all.

My limited understanding of how Americans are perceived by European countries is that we eat too much fast food. Also, we're inconsiderate, loud, and fail to respect people's privacy. We're brats -- always shouting, "Here! Here! Look at me!" Also, we think American football is football and we're confused about soccer. I might have to check my sources.

Honestly this has come up during a time when I'm particularly negative about being an American and I wasn't all that into it from the beginning. Although, I eat too much fast food -- I CAN be loud... although ... mostly in my own home ... in public I'm quiet... I AM curious about everything and I don't think that has to do with being an American because ... I'm worse about needing to know things than most Americans .... but in some areas I don't intrude... also I really strive to be considerate ... particularly when it comes to different cultures.

I shall consult with my local source on UK / US relations and cultural perspective and see what he says. He may be better informed on stereotypes than me.

Glamorizing oil dereks... and working on an assembly line can't be a real thing can it?

Oh, I forgot the railroads. Maybe in Ayn Rand's day 60 - 70 years ago. I have an ex who is a train conductor. He's a train conductor so he can read ... Don't think so ...

Obviously ... am confused and will have to ask around. My son says ... "I don't know .. motorcycles ... maybe a car.... try YouTube....so how bout you shoot for that instead of asking me like I'm f'ing google... if you want to talk ... tell me you want to talk ... but don't ask me about an oil derek thing ... I don't even know how to process that sh*t...."

The above is sort of an industrial commercial but the voice over talks about new frontiers. It shows an industrial area though. Also, a train. Also, the countryside. It's painfully non-specific. We like the idea of being in wide open spaces and hot sexy guys are usually guys who can get in a car and drive away quickly, or a bike.... the rivets commercial has a very industrial, contained feel to me.

A surgeon in jeans -- tainted love. :)

People of all types, colors, and shapes dancing in Levis.

All kinds of "normal" people wearing jeans.

Silly video.

Anyway, maybe its just me but I'd call all of the men in these videos cowboys.

Now I've wasted time.

Aha @AgentPete... a 'fabulous' new advert for Green & Black organic dark chocolate. The fairy tale trope;, Little Red Hiding Hood plays hide and seek with the wolves, because dark can be good.

And a new epic...Urban gangland cowboys and Guinness. 'Did I save the horse, or did she save me?'

H-o-w-l!

In this era of Netflix, commercials have become scarce. I don´t watch television anymore so I can´t come up with a single commercial that I have found interesting in the last year. It might be because i´m just not watching TV, but you raise a good point. Storytelling is crucial to selling, and when done right, it´s a thing of beauty. Makes me want to go into advertising!

Bittersweet. I know that little girl. I guess we all do, and the father. What makes the story work.
