I know that this isn't a book review site, but this is about sheer writing ability.

Just finished another of those serendipitous books I find in marina launderettes, and I'm stunned. 'The Outsiders' by S E Hinton. I looked at the blurb and thought 'not my kind of thing but I'll give it a go'.

I found it compulsive.

I'm amazed that such a book could be written by a 17 yr old - and a female at that, writing as a male. Such an engaging, moral story, so mature.

Chance finds are the best—though I also love it when friends recommend books to me. The Outsiders was adapted into a movie by Francis Ford Coppola in 1983, which was well received for its portrayal of poor urban teenagers seeking an identity and family through membership of gangs.

As sometimes happens with film adaptations of novels, the author S.E. Hinton played a cameo role—as a nurse.

I remember seeing the film some time ago. It was famous because of the young writer of the original novel and doubly famous for launching the careers of a whole host of young stars.

Does anyone know what happened to S.E. Hinton? I seem to remember she wrote a follow up to The Outsiders but I don't think it was filmed, however the rights could well have been bought.
